Why second hand clothes?

Why second hand clothes?

In Humana people to People we have been working with second hand clothes since 1978.

At the beginning it was simple to collect clothes from the overflow of clothes in Western Europe and send it to those in big need in Africa.

The transport from Europe to Africa was given as a donation by some of the big transport companies in Europe, and some private donors.

But as the amounts grew, it was not enough so funds had to be found elsewhere.

At the same time discussions with different governments in Southern Africa lead to the following conclusion: “People in Africa shall not get used to think of development as something that arrives with boat from Europe – development is something you create yourself”.

So instead of just giving the clothes for free, we started to look at the clothes as an income generating commodity that could be sold at prices that people can afford both in Europe and Africa, and use the money to pay all the cost for collection, sorting and distribution and then use the surplus for creating and run schools,  community development, food security and health programs in poor countries.

Looking only on second hand clothes in the world is not enough – you have to take a look at the bigger picture: it’s about clothing for the whole humanity, about limited resources and about CO2.
